Shawnee Hills Wine
Trail
The
wine industry in Southern Illinois began in 1984, when Guy Renzaglia established
Alto Vineyards. Alto's first wine was released in 1987 and by 1993, neighboring
Pomona Winery released their first two apple wines. With two wineries,
conversation began about creating a wine trail ... because there was a
beginning and an end! By the time the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail was
established in 1995, a third winery, Owl Creek Vineyard, had released
their first wine.
1995 marks the beginning
of a long series of promotional campaigns devoted to bringing travelers and wine
enthusiasts into the region to taste Southern Illinois wine, while enjoying the
magnificent vistas of the Shawnee National Forest. The story has continued to
grow as the number of wineries has continued to grow, as the region welcomes
thousands of travelers each year.
The
wineries along the trail are located just minutes apart and there are many other
businesses along the route that are sure to peak your interest. You can begin
your jaunt at either end of the trail ... or start in the middle ... but plan to
visit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in the near future!
